Renowned journalist William Ezekiel Kujo Deng, who founded the defunct Sudan Tribune newspaper, has passed on in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, according to a family source.

The deceased’s uncle, William Obany confirmed his demise to Eye Radio this morning.

“His death occurred on Saturday at around 3 am in Egypt, he went there from Khartoum because he was sick, he improved well and later,” said Obany.

“We did arrangements for him to go and get further treatment there in Egypt, because he can be there in the cool situation, the reason of his death is the Hypoglycemia.”

Obany says William Ezekiel Deng, 54, died on Saturday of hypoglycemia – a condition triggered by a sudden drop of blood sugar level below normal capacity.

Ezekiel was a professional journalist for several years with the Sudan News Agency before the signing of Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.

Prior to the CPA, he co-founded the Khartoum Monitor Newspaper in 2,000 before establishing his own news agency, the Sudan Tribune in 2005.

Ezekiel played a crucial role in the establishment of media institutions in the former Southern Sudan. He is survived by several sons and daughters.

His uncle, William Obany said the late had been critically ill for sometimes before he opted to settle in Egypt.

Obany told Eye Radio that arrangements are underway to fly his body to Khartoum where he will be buried.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media especially from his colleagues, friends and media practitioners in South Sudan and Sudan.
