The Deputy Special Representative of UN Secretary General in South Sudan reiterates the mission’s readiness to support upcoming general elections, adding that the South Sudanese government must prioritize all necessary steps to enable a successful democratic process.

Guang Chong made the statement on Tuesday at a dialogue in Juba organized by CEPO and UNMISS to encourage the peace parties to reach a consensus on the anticipated elections.

Chong said the UN agencies and international community will play their role in the electoral process as long as the people and government of South Sudan initiate key tasks.

“I want to assure all parties and all stakeholders that we stand ready to support the constitution making, the elections process but we do have to be mindful that this is South Sudanese-led and owned process,” he said.

According to him, any external support to the process will only compliment efforts of the people and government of South Sudan in ensuring a free, fair and credible elections in the country.

“Even though we are ready to support, but you know the South Sudanese need to put in place all these necessary conditions so that we can better support you and our role is in support of and complimentary to the national effort that need to be in place.”

“That is why it is very important for the government, for all the parties to take the lead and to play your roles so that the international community, regional organizations and international organizations will be able to support you”.

According to the Revitalized Peace Agreement and Roadmap, South Sudanese people are expected to go to polls in December next year to choose their leaders in a free, fair and credible elections.
