The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has confiscated and destroyed illegal weapons possessed by internally displaced persons within the Protection of civilians’ sites in Jonglei State.

The weapons that were burnt include 20 A-K-47, more than 100 ammunitions, 20 machetes, 140 military uniform and bayonets.

Yesterday the UN Mission in South Sudan confiscated and destroyed weapons that, it says were taken illegally into the P-o-Cs by I-D-P-s who escaped violence and are sheltering at its base in Bor.

UNMISS Coordinator in Jonglei State, Hazel De Wet, told the public during destruction of the weapons that nobody would be allowed to enter UN base with a weapon.

She said the camps were extensively searched and all weapons have now been collected from the I-D-P-s and burnt.

“I would like to appreciate that you would collectively inform the community. We have confiscated as of today every single weapon that we have been able to find within our base.” She said.

UNMISS Deputy Police Advisor in Jonglei State, Colonel Komane Eddy, says the protection of civilians’ sites in Bor are now weapons free, because they have collected all the guns that were taken into the camps.

“Where they are staying now is weapons free. We can be very sure that there are no weapons now.” He said. “We have got our UN police and Bangladesh at the exit entry point to ensure that who enter the primacies does not smuggle or enter in with item that is prohibited.” He added.

Jonglei State’s Deputy Governor, Baba Medan, applauded UNMISS for the initiative to collect and destroy weapons that were in the hands of I-D-P-s.

He said the government was happy to witness the collection and destruction of these weapons.

“We are very happy and we have come here to witness what is happening.” He said.
