The UN Mission in South Sudan Head of Field Office for Central Equatoria State has applauded the appointment of the first-ever female mayor of Juba City.

Njoki Kinyanjui made the expression on Tuesday following her weekly meeting with Central Equatoria State Governor, Emmanuel Adil Anthony.

Her appreciation came ten days after Governor Adil issued a gubernatorial decree in which he appointed Flora Gabriel Modi as the Mayor of Juba.

Before her appointment, Flora was first relieved from her position as the Commissioner General of the State Investment Authority.

She replaced former mayor, Emmanuel Khamis who was relieved for slapping a female vendor.

Flora has become the first woman to serve as Juba City Mayor since independence.

While updating Governor Adil on the security and development projects in the state, Njoki Kinyanjui, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Head of Field Office for Central Equatoria State, praised the governor’s decision to appoint a female mayor and described it as pivotal at this time.

“I had a meeting with the Governor of Central Equatoria state, this is one of the monthly meetings that normally UNMISS has with the governor.

“In this meeting,  we updated the governor on the plans that we have, especially under the quick impact program in terms of construction in term of infrastructure and support to infrastructure,

“We applauded the governor for appointing a new woman Mayor and I think this is an important juncture in the leadership of Juba County,” she said.

Kinyanjui said UNMISS looks forward to with working with the state government and the mayor.

“We look forward to continuing working with central Equatoria state as well as the Mayor,” she added.
