Unity State government has embarked on renovating the feeder roads linking Bentiu with the counties and another initiative to open a Nile port in Koch County.

A statement from the state governor’s office said Dr. Joseph Manytuil made an assessment visit to the highway from Tharjiath oilfield to Mirmir Payam, on Wednesday.

Speaking to residents, Manytuil said his administration will rehabilitate the highway southward up to Adok Port in neighboring Leer, to enhance movement of goods and humanitarian assistance.

The state governor also said he will open and rehabilitate Thowath-Thiech port east of Mirmir Payam as an alternative route for commercial goods and humanitarian agencies.

The state has been badly hit by four years of devastating seasonal floods that submerged swathes of its territories, destroying livelihoods and displacing thousands of people.

Seasonal rains between 2019 and 2022 result in the overflowing of the rivers Nile, Lol, and Sobat, as well as the wetlands, causing unprecedented flooding in vast areas of land and settlements, the UN humanitarian agency – OCHA said.

The floods situation means the feeder roads in Unity State and several lowlands of the country are only assessable during the dry season.
