UAP saga: National staff body asks firm to reinstate suspended members

The Executive Body of the National Staffs of UAP Insurance Company is calling on the private firm to reinstate the suspended employees as per the Ministry of Labor’s recent directive.

On date October 4, the Ministry of Labor resolved that the foreign insurance company, UAP reinstate the national staff it terminated and nationalize positions of Kenyan employees working from their country.

This was after fifty-seven UAP national staffs were suspended after protesting the domestication of Kenyan nationals who were considered as expatriates.

In a letter dated September 18th, the striking South Sudanese employees of the company had complained of poor working environment.

The call by the executives of the National UAP comes four days after their colleagues threatened to resume strike within 7 days if the company fails give back their jobs.

In a letter dated November 2, 2023, the suspended staff said the company is playing delay tactics including staff harassment, deformation and systemic manipulations at the expenses of the UAP national staff and the supreme laws of South Sudan.

This is despite the agreed resolutions which included their reinstatement, development of a clear implementation plan and matrix to the issues of concerns.

Meanwhile, the executive body of the national staff has alleged that some of the colleagues had their contracts terminated for raising the burning concerns during meetings.

Taban Moses, who represents the national staff, called on the company to respect and adhere to the Ministry of Labor’s verdict.

“For us we have been out since then, the ministry actually told us that yes they are working, they trying to push the management to ensure that they comply with directives from the ministry, but since then nothing has really changed,” he told Eye Radio.

“The message is very clear, we want the management to comply with the directives from the ministry, to look into those issues like the file issue of which one to reinstate the executives.”

In the resolution signed by Undersecretary Mary Hillary Wani, the Labor Ministry demanded that the national human resource workers be trained and given full responsibility at the company.

It also called upon the insurance company to review the salary structure for national employees, in accordance with its financial capacity.

The Ministry further recommended to the UAP management to comply and adhere to the resolutions of the institution without fail.
