The United Arab Emirates said on Monday that the residence of its Head of Mission in Khartoum was attacked and extensively damaged by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) aircraft.
This comes as SAF is fighting a major offensive in the Sudanese capital on September 25 in a bid to regain areas under the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a press statement, UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it strongly condemns the “heinous attack” which it said was a targeted incident and called on the army to assume full responsibility.
“The Ministry expressed its strong condemnation of these criminal acts and its permanent rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism aimed at destabilizing security and stability, in contravention of international law,” it said.
Abu Dhabi also said its foreign ministry will submit a letter to regional multi-lateral organizations including the African Union, the Arab States and the United Nations against the attack.
The Gulf nation said the air strike on the residence of its diplomat to Sudan represents a “flagrant violation” of the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic premises.
“The Ministry stressed the importance of protecting diplomatic buildings and embassy staff residences, in accordance with the treaties and customs that regulate diplomatic relations,” the statement added.
Sudan has been gripped by a vicious conflict which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army under Gen. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and RSF leader Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, which has killed an estimated 150,000 people, displaced 10 million others and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The Sudanese government has repeatedly accused the UAE of providing weapons to its rival RSF and prolonging the war, but UAE terms the allegations “baseless” and accused the junta of refusing to negotiate peace with its enemy.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Sudan’s warring parties, particularly the RSF, have committed widespread atrocities including gang rape and forcing women and girls into marriages in Khartoum.
