Two truck drivers hired to transport medical supplies to Yei River County were killed and their vehicles burned down along a highway by unknown gunmen on Saturday, an official has confirmed.

Yei Commissioner Aggrey Cyrus said the trucks, hired by a humanitarian agency to deliver Medical and Nutrition supplies to Yei Civil Hospital were attacked in Lainya County while on their way back to Juba.

Cyrus said the ambush occurred near the Lokurubang village – about four miles from Lainya town.

The victims are identified as Lemson Nyandai from Burundi and Daniel Wanjala from Kenya, while Mohammed Hashi from Somalia survived with injuries.

Commissioner of Yei River County Aggrey Cyrus Kanyikwa narrated the incident to Eye Radio this morning.

“The two trucks delivered medical supplies and nutrition food to Yei Civil Hospital. After offloading, they were returning back yesterday when they fell into an ambush in an area called Lokurubang about 4 miles from Lainya,” Cyrus narrated to Eye Radio.

“(Assailants) shot at them at close range without any attempt to stop or question the drivers. They shot and after shooting two drivers died and the assistant driver who fled was injured in the head and the two trucks were burned at the same scene.”

Aggrey further said he is yet to establish who the attackers are and where they come from.

He said an investigation is ongoing to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the deadly ambush.

“Investigation is continuing to establish exactly whether there are motives behind the attack or what is the motive behind when there was a sticker of UNICEF, and it is well understood which organization is UNICEF and it has nothing to do with violence it is a neutral UN Agency.”
