Two SPLA army soldiers have been convicted of the murder of two civilian women in Pibor County, Jonglei State.

The two soldiers, who were both sergeants, shot and killed the women and also injured a child while they were on patrol on July 31st.

The soldiers were later arrested by the SPLA Command in Pibor and stood trial.

The two sergeants were sentenced to compensate for the death of the two women with 45 heads of cattle each.

“According to our laws, they were supposed to be sentenced to death,” SPLA Spokesperson Colonel Philip Aguer told Eye Radio, “but the two families convened, the family of the two women killed, and the family of these soldiers.  They reached a compromise that the two ladies should be compensated.”

He said the soldiers were also dismissed from military service.
