Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba. (Office of the President).

The Speaker of the National Parliament has led a fact-finding mission to the Rwandan capital, Kigali, to discuss security, humanitarian and political situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jemma Nunu Kumba arrived in Kigali on Sunday, in her capacity president of the forum of parliamentarians of the Great Lakes Region, together with delegates from Zambia, Kenya and Angola.

Nunu says her delegation is in Kigali to seek issues contributing to the escalating conflict in the North Kivu Province of DRC, including the re-emergence of the March 23rd rebel group.

She also said they will assess Rwanda’s perspective on the regional peace mission and ways to resolve the deadly violence.

“The main purpose of our coming is to find issues related to the conflict, the lingering conflict in the eastern part of the DRC, with specific reference to the re-emergence of the M23 and also the resentment against the Monasco and the regional peace initiative,” Nunu told the media.

“This is to find their views on this conflict in DRC and find out what they think are the root causes of this problem and how wonder things this problem can be resolved. And what does Rwanda think about the regional initiative.”

Jemma Nunu said she believes that dialogue is the only method of solving any military issue.

“All in all, as parliamentarians of the region we believe in dialogue, and military actions is not a solution to any problem.”

“We encourage dialogue in our analysis and our recommendation that the root cause of the problem needs to be identified and addressed as the first step towards addressing the problem and that there must be a political dialogue between this country and DRC, to resolve the problem.”

The forum of the parliamentarian of the Great Lakes Region is composed of 12 National Parliaments of the Republic of Angola, the Republic of Burundi, the Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo.

Others are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Republic of South Sudan, and the Republic of the Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of Zambia.

The main objective of the forum is to make a significant parliamentary contribution to the implementation of the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region
