South Sudan is set to receive $6 million from the World Trade Organization for development of the trade industry in the country.

The pledge is under the Enhance Integrated Frame Work, a multi-donor program which helps least-developed countries in the global trading system.

The Undersecretary in the Ministry of Trade and Investment, Simon Anei, said the ministry has submitted 12 projects to donors.

These projects include: “Cement factory in Kapoeta, cement factory in Kajo –keji and a cement factory in Mangayat in Western Bahr el Ghazal”.

Establishment of sugar companies in various parts of the country are also some of the proposals.

“The donors have accepted that they are working on it. After two to three months, they will give us the feedback for these projects.” Mr Anei told the media upon his arrival from Geneva.

He added that South Sudan is applying for the membership in the World Trade Organization.

WTO is an organization that intends to supervise and liberalize international trade.

The organization officially commenced on 1 January 1995 under the Marrakech Agreement, signed by 123 nations on 15 April 1994, replacing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which commenced in 1948.

The organization deals with regulation of trade between participating countries by providing a framework for negotiating and formalizing trade agreements and a dispute resolution process aimed at enforcing participants’ adherence to WTO agreements, which are signed by representatives of member governments and ratified by their parliaments
