No enough funds to preposition food ahead of rainy season – WFP

The World Food Program says it does not have enough funds to preposition food assistance to people in the conflict-affected areas before the rainy season.

The Executive Director of WFP, Ertharin Cousin, says they plan to deliver thousands of metric tons of food.

She was addressing the media after visiting IDP camps in Unity state and Juba.

“The difficult news is that we don’t have enough money to get all these programs going. We are US$ 250 million dollars short, with all the commitments that donors have made, just to operate our programmes for the next six months,” said Ms Cousin.

“So, we need donor help. WFP is 100% voluntarily funded. And we need the people in the world to recognize that there is hope in South Sudan.”

Ertharin Cousin has been accompanied by U.S. ambassador to the U.N. agencies in Rome, David Lane on the three day visit to South Sudan.
