Hundreds of people gathered today at Dr John Garang Mausoleum in Juba to mark the 59th anniversary of the War Veterans Day.

This year’s theme is: Veterans, the founders’ of our freedom. More details to follow.

The event is to commemorate the Torit Mutiny in 1955. The mutiny began on August 18, 1955, triggering the First Sudanese Civil War.

The Torit mutiny led to the formation of the Anyanya movement, which fought the Khartoum government until the signing of the Addis Ababa Peace Agreement in 1972.
