Up to 16 cases of rape have been reported after the killing of the paramount chief of Rumbek East County, a Member of Parliament in Lakes State has said.

Paramount chief Aperer Chut Dhuol, brother to the state care-taker Governor, was killed in his house by a gunman last week.

The MP, Marik Nanga, says the rape cases were in revenge for the killing of the chief.

“From the source on the ground, some are telling us up to 16 women got raped. And from those who were brought to hospital, the figure we are getting is about eight,” said Mr Nanga.

Hon Nanga condemned the act, saying it’s not culturally acceptable.

“In the Dinka culture, the issue of rape as a revenge for a person killed has never been there. This is for the first time this thing is happening.”

Information about the perpetrators is unknown.

Lakes State authorities have formed a committee to investigate the killing of the paramount chief.
