Renewed shooting in Maridi

Author : | Published: Monday, June 15, 2015

There was renewed shooting last night in Maridi County in Western Equatoria State during the visit of the governor, Joseph Bakosoro.

This comes a week after eight people were killed in a similar incident in the town.

Mr Bakasoro and a delegation from Juba went to the area to hold public rallies to preach peace.

But shooting erupted between cattle keepers and local youths. The delegation has been in a meeting with leaders of both cattle keepers and the local people.

“As the meeting was going on yesterday, just to our surprise, we saw a lorry full of cows that were being brought to Maridi and were being offloaded at the town center some twenty yards from the county headquarters, where all of the delegates were,” Eye Radio’s Paul Night reported.

“So the cows were being offloaded in that destination and when the youth came and tried to talk to them about why they are bringing the cows here. Until in the evening, around six, we heard gunfire started again in the location where the cows were off loaded.

“Until know we don’t know if there were casualties.”
