Planting season: Jonglei farmers lack seeds

Author : | Published: Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Farmers in Jonglei State lack seeds as the planting season begins, the minister of agriculture has announced.

Mayen Ngor says the national government and aid agencies have the seeds, but have delayed in sending them to the farmers.

He says farmers in his state start planting at the beginning of the season.

“At this particular time, the seeds should be on the grounds with the farmers; this is not the time for delivering the seeds,” Mr Ngor stated.

The government is encouraging farmers to improve on agriculture to avoid food insecurity next year.

But the commissioner of Twic East County, Dau Akoi, says there could be hunger next year unless seeds are delivered to the state immediately.

“They should distribute the seeds and the tools to farmers so that they can produce their foods,” he said.

In an effort to boost production, the Catholic Relief Service trained farmers on good farming practices in Bor last week.
