Peace deal or UN trusteeship – IGAD

Author : | Published: Friday, January 2, 2015

A senior member of the government delegation to the peace talks says if President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar fail to sign peace in their next meeting in Addis, the IGAD countries may opt to put South Sudan under trustee United Nations.

James Kok Ruei says IGAD mediators told the delegations of the two parties before they left Addis Ababa last month that there are only two options left for IGAD countries.

Kok was addressing more than 500 people who attended a prayer held at the house of the former Chief-of-Staff this afternoon.

β€œIt was written in the IGAD communique on the 7th of November 2013, that they (The IGAD) said if the two parties, to the conflict continue to violate the cessation of hostilities and they continue to kill people, the region will intervene with no reference to the parties.” He said. This is what is waiting President Salva Kiir. Now he is going for two options, there are only two options, take it or leave it.” He added.

Kok said the SPLM inter-party dialogue held in Arusha Tanzania is the only solution to the crisis in South Sudan.
