Parliament endorses 2014/2015 budget

The National Parliament has approved 11.3 billion Pounds as the budget for the fiscal year 2014/2015. 

The budget which was passed yesterday in the parliament has prioritized agriculture, road construction, assistance to states affected by the conflict, funding Constituency Development projects and payment of arrears.

The chairperson of the Committee of Economy, Development and Finance, Honorable Goc Makuac Mayol said they saved over 162 million pounds by making some cuts on travel cost, training, supply, tools and materials and other operating expenditure.

Hon Goc said these cuts were made to fund the agriculture and the road sectors.

“The parliament recommended the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning to rehabilitate the following roads to facilitate the transport of local produce to access the market; Juba-Kajo-Keji, Juba Yirol- Shambe, Juba- Yei-Kaya, Juba –Bor, Juba-Mundri-Yambio,” he Hon Goc.

Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity are some of the states that have been prioritized in the budget.

Hon Goc said the committee made these recommendations based on the fact that some needs are critical to the economic growth of the country.

The parliament also allocated 750, 000 pounds to the Council of States for domestic travel to Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Greater Juba District.

It also allocated 2 million pounds for the recruitment of qualified staff for the Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Center.

The National Assembly also directed the Ministry of Finance to collect revenues from all government and non-governmental agencies and remit to National Revenue Funds to support the fiscal budget.
