Northern Bahr el Ghazal Governor Simon Ober Mawut has called on displaced Sudanese nationals to return to their homes, assuring them of security escorts and additional government protection.
Governor Mawut also announced the suspension of house-to-house searches for looted property and declared the reopening of Aweil’s main market to boost economic activity in the state.
In a statement on January 22, Mr. Mawut’s office said traders are permitted to operate from morning until 4:00 PM daily for the next two weeks.
“The governor urges individuals whose property was unlawfully confiscated during the searches to come forward with proof of ownership to have their belongings returned,” the statement added.
The state government added that the unrest that occurred on 16th January 2025 – had displaced more than 2,500 Sudanese nationals in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
Angry youth attacked Sudanese-owned shops in markets last Thursday – in an apparent reprisal for the killing of South Sudanese citizens allegedly by Sudan Armed Forces in Wed Medani, Al Jazira state.
More than 10 people have been confirmed dead following violent demonstrations across South Sudan including in Juba, Aweil and other towns, according to the national police.
In Aweil alone, nine people including seven Sudanese and two South Sudanese were killed in the violence.
The Sudanese junta has formed a committee that was already sworn in to investigate the atrocities, according the head of committee, Yassir Bashir Al-Bukhari who is First Assistant to the Attorney General of the Sudan.
On January 21, NBGs government said a joint security force in Aweil recovered assorted items looted by the protestors, and thanked law enforcement agencies for recovering looted properties and maintaining peace in the state.
