At least five people were killed and others wounded during inter-communal fighting triggered by the shooting of a man who impregnated a girl in Rumbek Center County in Lakes State, an official said.
The state’s Acting Minister of Information William Koji Kirjok said the incident was between two sections of Joth and Tiak communities in Mayom Payam of Rumbek Center.
“The brothers of the girl decided to shoot the man who impregnated their sister, and the issue trigger conflict which claimed the life of five people, and wounded 3 others,” he said.
Mr. Koji said calm has returned after the security forces intervened and separated the two fighting communities.
He said the government has warned citizens against taking law into their hands. He suggests reporting disputes to the police, adding that any individual who disturbs peace will face full force of the law.
“Lakes State has signed a customary law that gives right to everyone. In case you have a case, whether related to girl or adultery, there is no need for the individuals to take law into their own hands.”
Minister Koji said the state government is currently hunting down the perpetrators for justice and accountability.
