Authorities in the United States city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, have launched a homicide investigation after a South Sudanese national allegedly stabbed his wife to death on Friday morning, July 31.

According to Tri-State News in the US, law enforcement identified the suspect as Yien Dak, a migrant from South Sudan. Dak was apprehended in neighboring Iowa following a high-speed interstate tracking effort.

The Sioux Falls Police Department reported that emergency personnel—including the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol—were dispatched at approximately 10:09 a.m. to a residence in the 3900 block of West 41st Street, near the Empire Mall. Upon arrival, responding officers located the deceased victim inside the home.

Detectives immediately opened a murder probe and identified Dak as the suspect. Authorities credited the city’s Flock Safety license-plate cameras with helping police quickly track his fleeing vehicle across state lines.

Working alongside regional agencies in Iowa, investigators intercepted Dak in Monona County, where he was taken into custody at around 12:15 p.m.—just over two hours after the emergency call.

Authorities confirmed the suspect is in custody and stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains in its early stages. Police have not formally released the victim’s identity or disclosed what led to the attack. Crime scene technicians continue processing evidence near West 41st Street and South Shirley Avenue, with officials advising motorists to expect traffic delays in the area.

Local police said additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.

However, the victim has been described by relatives, friends, and members of the South Sudanese community as a hardworking entrepreneur and mother who had built a successful business while living in the U.S.

News of her death has prompted an outpouring of grief, with many expressing concern for the children and family she leaves behind.
