The Western Equatoria State Transitional Legislative Assembly has resumed sittings in Yambio after a six-month recess, with state leaders calling for peace, improved security, and stronger governance ahead of South Sudan’s forthcoming elections.

Addressing lawmakers on Wednesday, Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa said his administration remains committed to peace through dialogue and reconciliation. He said peace forums have been established across the state’s counties, while more than 3,700 former opposition soldiers are expected to be integrated into the national forces as part of the peace process.

Governor Rimbasa said security has improved in most areas of the state, but challenges remain in Mundri East County, Northern Yambio Payam, and Bandala in Nagero County. He pledged to strengthen community policing, recruit more police personnel, and improve border security.

Assembly Speaker Anna Tuna Richard called on the government to remove illegal roadblocks and checkpoints across the state’s ten counties, saying they restrict movement, affect trade, and increase the cost of living through illegal taxation.

The Speaker also urged authorities to improve health and education services, integrate unpaid civil servants from the former states of Tambura, Maridi, and Amadi, and address ongoing land disputes among communities.

She appealed to the governments of Western Equatoria and Central Equatoria states to work together to end the conflict between Moru and Mundari communities and ensure accountability for acts of violence.

Speaker Tuna further condemned the killing of Naduru Area football team coach George Kobo Wani, calling for a full investigation and justice for those responsible.

The reopening of the Assembly marks the start of Western Equatoria’s 2026 legislative session as the state prepares for elections and focuses on improved service delivery.
