Authorities in Eastern Equatoria State say one person has been killed and two others wounded after unknown gunmen ambushed a vehicle along the Torit-Magwi Road.
State Minister of Information Elias Ahaji said the vehicle was carrying two Members of Parliament, a driver, and a bodyguard when it came under attack near the Torit-Magwi junction.
He said the driver was shot dead, while one lawmaker and the bodyguard sustained injuries.
“There was a car traveling along to the Parliament. The car was taking along two Honourable Members of Parliament, and then a driver plus a bodyguard. So on their way to Magwi, just a few meters from the junction, from Torit to Magwi, they fell in an ambush laid by unknown criminal. So in that, one driver was shot dead and two were wounded. One a member of Parliament, and then a bodyguard was also wounded,” Ahaji told Eye Radio.
He added that security forces have launched investigations and are tracking the attackers.
“The investigation are still ongoing. People are still following the foot marks. The organize forces are following the foot mark. The road has been safe all these days. People have been moving without any fear. But we are only surprised today why it has happened,” Ahaji said.
The attack comes after a period of relative calm along the Torit-Magwi Road, according to the state authorities.
