 South Sudan police have arrested two suspected drug traffickers at Juba International Airport allegedly carrying 15 cartons of narcotics believed to be destined for Renk County in Upper Nile State.

The suspects were arrested by the Anti-Drug Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling and the use of amphetamine-type substances in the country.

The operationon Monday followed a directive from the Inspector General of Police to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

Speaking on SSBC, Director of Criminal Investigations Lieutenant General Abraham Albino commended the Anti-Drug Unit for the arrest and urged the public to cooperate with authorities in addressing drug-related crimes.

Albino warned that drug abuse is causing serious harm to the current generation and said authorities are increasing checks on goods entering the country through border points.

“We are scrutinizing all imports entering the country through its border crossings. We have become a transit point for drugs, but we trust our forces and their ability to confront this,” Albino said.

He said the two suspects, identified as nationals of Sudan and Eritrea, are undergoing interrogation and will be taken to court after investigations are completed.

“Two individuals were arrested in possession of 15 cartons loaded with narcotics en route to Renk in Upper Nile. They are currently being interrogated and will be referred to court upon completion of the investigation,” Albino added.
