The international medical charity, M-S-F, says it has carried out a vaccination campaign and immunized more than 14,000 children both inside and outside the camp in Unity State’s capital, Bentiu.

The agency says it remains vigilant about disease outbreaks, the crowded camp environment, which poses risks to young children especially for communicable diseases such as measles.

M-S-F’s Emergency Manager in Bentiu, Vanessa Cramond, says they are concerned about civilians who live outside the camp and cannot access the services offered by the organization.

She says over the last few months, several children have died from complications related to measles infections, and last week, with support of other health actors, M-S-F carried out a vaccination campaign and immunized more than 14,200 children both inside and outside the camp in Bentiu.

Ms Cramond says they have screened children for malnutrition and they observed positive signs of improvement among the children.

She says over the last three weeks, they have not had any deaths in the M-S-F hospital attributed to malnutrition.

Cramond says she believes the improvement is down to the provision of clean drinking water and improved healthcare and nutrition services within the camp together with the regular general food distributions to the Internally Displaced Persons or I-D-P-s.

She says M-S-F’s teams are providing healthcare to forty-thousand people who are sheltering in the UN ‘protection of civilians’ site near Unity State capital, Bentiu, which is one of the areas most affected by conflict.

At present, M-S-F runs a hospital within the camp in Bentiu with maternity, pediatric and tuberculosis wards. There is also an emergency department and surgical care.
