Ministry of Defense has set up a pension program for the families of martyrs, SPLA Spokesperson has said.

Col Philip Aguer says they have registered several families of martyrs, who could receive benefits when the economy improves. These are soldiers who lost lives to the 21-year civil war.

He spoke to Eye Radio on the Martyrs’ Day today, which is also the 10th anniversary of the death of the late leader, Dr John Garang.

“The ministry of defense has plan, program and policy to provide the necessary gratuity for the martyr’s families,” Col Aguer said.

“We expect that if the economic situation has improved, all martyrs families which are registered will get their gratuity for the heroes who gave their souls for this country.”

He added that the occasion marking the day will be held at the Dr. John Garang mausoleum in Juba this afternoon.

Security was tightened in Juba this morning. Soldiers were deployed the main streets of the town.
