Police in Yambio have arrested a man after he allegedly shot dead a football coach on Sunday evening, authorities in Western Equatoria State have said.

Speaking to Eye Radio, the State Minister of Information, Mohammed Juma, said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, which followed an alleged domestic dispute.

“The coach, George Kobo Wani, was accused of dating the suspect’s wife. The suspect first found them together with another man and a woman. He then went back home, brought a gun, returned on a motorbike, and shot the coach,” Minister Juma said.

He added that security forces responded immediately after the shooting and took the suspect into custody.

“As the government, we deployed security personnel immediately. The suspect is now in police custody, and the woman is also being held as investigations continue. We have asked the relatives to remain calm and not to take action. The case will be taken to court,” he said.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 28.

George Kobo Wani was the head coach of Naduru Residential Area in the ongoing Yambio Inter-Area Tournament. He had previously played for Al Wehida Football Club, St. Mary Football Club, and the Western Equatoria State team.

Following his death, the Yambio Football Association suspended all football activities for three days in his honour, describing the incident as a significant loss to football in the state.
