The United Nations has warned that about 1.3 million people in South Sudan are likely to be affected by malaria from October this year to the end of January 2016.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says aid agencies need more funds to control the unprecedented outbreak.

It says nearly 1.6 million malaria cases, including more than 650 deaths, have been recorded since the beginning of the year.

In its bi-weekly report, UNOCHA says most cases have been reported in Central and Eastern Equatoria, Lakes, Northern and Western Bahr el Ghazal, and Warrap states.

In IDP settings, about 4,920 cases are reported weekly, it added.
