Kiir reassures Pope Francis of free, credible elections

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reassured the Holy See of his administration’s commitment, to conduct free and credible elections this Year, according to his office.

Kiir reportedly told Vatican’s Official Cardinal Michael Czerny on Monday in a meeting in Juba.

His visit was to mark the 1st anniversary of Pope Francis’s peace pilgrimage to South Sudan.

The Vatican Envoy reportedly said while “the Holy Sea warmly remembers his last year’s visit to South Sudan, he called on the leaders to embrace peace and stability as the country heads toward a democratic transition.’

Cardinal Czerny told President Kiir that “Pope Francis is looking forward to seeing peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in South Sudan, according to Presidential Press Unit.”

The report stated that President Kiir welcomed the Vatican’s willingness to support the upcoming general elections.

It cited the Presidential Affairs Minister, Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro as saying President Kiir reassured the Holy See of his administration’s commitment, to conduct free and credible elections this Year
