President Salva Kiir has paid tribute to workers across the country in his Labour Day message, praising their role in nation building.

In a statement addressed to citizens on Friday, Kiir applauded the resilience, sacrifice, and dedication of South Sudanese workers, describing them as a source of strength and hope for a better future.

Wishing the citizens a happy Labour, he noted that their daily efforts continue to drive national development despite ongoing challenges.

His message comes as commemorations are underway at Juba National Stadium, where senior government officials have gathered, with Presidential Envoy for Special Programs Adut Salva Kiir and other top officials expected to preside over the ceremony.

UN and representatives of other organizations are also expected to attend the commemorations.

Celebrated on 1 May, International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is a global event that recognizes the contributions of workers, celebrates the achievements of the labour movement, and advocates for safe and equitable working conditions.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the 2026 theme for Labour Day is “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment”.
