President Salva Kiir and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar have suggested building monuments in honor of the country’s fallen heroes and heroines in their ancestral lands.

The two leaders disclosed the plan during the last funeral prayers of the former SPLA commander and one-time minister of defense. Gen. John Kong Nyuon in Juba on Saturday.

Dr. Riek Machar said building monuments for these “iconic” personalities will remind the coming generation of the country’s history.

“Mr. President, it is good to make monuments across the nation. Today, we have only one monument John Garang Mausoleum. There are others that have passed away that we also need to recognize with monuments in the region,” Machar said.

“They can be in the regions they come from and particularly in their hometowns, somebody can say I must visit so that our history is kept, and our heroes are remembered.”

Speaking during the same occasion, President Kiir also upheld the suggestion.

However, he said the current security situation in the country is an obstacle to building the monuments.

“Before, Dr. Riek said something about building monuments for our heroes for example we should have a monument for John Kong in Fangak,” said the head of state.

“It’s a good idea to have this monument of our heroes in their homeland we shall do it when the situation is stable.”

President Kiir described late John Kong as a true friend and selfless freedom fighter who dedicated his life to liberation struggle against marginalization and injustices that led to the independence of South Sudan.

He also eulogized General Kong as a principled man who did not only shunned tribal politics, but also believed in unity, diversity and peaceful coexistence among the South Sudanese people.

Gen. John Kong Nyuon, one of the founding members of the SPLM/SPLA, passed away in December last year in Nairobi. He was in his late 70s.

Kong joined the first Anyanya movement in 1964 and served in different garrisons before earning the rank of a captain.

He was assigned Commander of 105 and 104 Battalion under the overall command of Lt. Col. William Nyuon Bany.

In 1987, the late was promoted to the rank of Alternate Commander (A/CDR), a newly created SPLA ranking structure in the former guerilla movement.

In the same year, he was appointed Deputy Commander of Shakush Battalion under the zonal command of Commander James Wani Igga.

In 1992, he was the Overall commander of Operation Jungle Storm (OJS)-Juba operation and in 1993 he was appointed member of the Leadership Council and also Commander of the Independent Area Command of Yei and Kajo Keji.

After the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, CPA in 2005, Late John Kong served as a Presidential Security Advisor in 2007 and as a Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs after independence in 2011.
