Kiir directs AMB Morgan to reform Foreign Affairs Ministry

President Kiir has directed the new Minister of Foreign Affairs to introduce reforms and address the financial challenges facing foreign missions.

Kiir appointed Ambassador James Morgan on August 31, after dismissing Deng Dau, the Acting Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Kiir urged Dr Morgan to bring his diverse expertise and reforms to the ministry.

President Kiir also emphasised the need for a collaborative approach to advancing the nation’s foreign policy and the welfare of the staff in foreign missions.
For his part, Dr. Morgan promises to build participatory leadership in the Ministry for the effective execution of its mandate.
Amb. Morgan replaced Mayiik Ayii Deng who was sacked in March 2023.

Deng Dau was assigned to take charge of the docket in March 2023 after Kiir sacked Mayiik Ayii Deng.

President Kiir did not appoint a new Deputy Minister to replace Deng Dau Deng Malek.

Before his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Morgan was South Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union (AU), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Ababa.

He was also a permanent representative to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Djibouti.
