The Mayor of Juba City has called on butchers at Konyokonyo Market and other markets in the city to maintain cleanliness in their shops and slaughterhouses.

Flora Gabriel Modi said many butcheries in the market are unsanitary and do not meet the health standards set by the state Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries.

Mayor Modi called for the election of a Butchers Union leadership to work with the City Council in regulating and ensuring the cleanliness of butcheries.

“We want to see all Butcheries clean in accordance with the standards of Animal Resources. When we inspected the (butcheries), there are many things which are not good,” Ms. Modi said.

“We think it is time to have an elected Butchers Union that will be formed according to the standards of Butchers Union and we as City Council see things that are of our concern.”

On Friday 1st March 2024, the Juba City Council and Central Equatoria State Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries, and Tourism visited four major markets in the capital Juba.

The assessed markets include Suk Libya, Gudele 1, Custom, Jebel, and Konyo Konyo markets.

Mayor Flora stressed that butcheries in Kony-konyo market are dirty and requires regulations to make sure they are conducive.

“We need to have the spirit of cleanliness, Konyo-konyo market has a lot of garbage.  The butchery, which is behind us, is not healthy and it is not my responsibility because there are people concerned of health.”

“Meat requires a clean and cold place to be sold in it and we will see as the Juba City Council in the Future a specific place for the Butchers.”
