The Mayor of Juba City Council has proposed naming a street after Pope Francis ahead of his expected visit to the country this year.

The Mayor of Juba City Council has proposed naming a street after Pope Francis ahead of his expected visit to the country this year.

Michael Ladu Allahjabu announced this during a blessing of the altar, set to host the holy father, Pope Francis.

According to the Vatican, the Papal two-day visit to South Sudan is scheduled for July.

He will first visit the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Apostolic visit of the Pontiff was delayed several times due to the security situation in the country.

According to the Mayor of Juba, his proposal is to honor Pope Francis for his support to the South Sudan peace process.

Allah-Jabu said the proposal has been submitted to the state governor, pending approval.

Speaking to the media at Dr. John Garang Mausoleum Monday morning, Allahjabu says he wrote a request to Governor Adil for approval.

“I proposed that a road to be name in his name but I don’t have powers in order to that but I have forwarded the written request to my Governor His Excellency Emmanuel Adil Anthony,” said Mayor Allahjabu

“If he found it really genuine for us to do that for his holiness, I think that will refer to His Excellency the President for the blessing.

“We hope the name is going to be given to a big road that is not short. It leads up to Simon Jada bridge, so is a wider road which is good for his holiness.”

In April 2019 at Vatican retreat, Pope Francis knelt and kissed the feet of President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar, Taban Deng Gai and Rebecca Nyadeng.

He then urged them not to return the country to war.
