Jonglei teachers’ strike: Ringleaders suspended

Author : | Published: Thursday, November 10, 2016

The Jonglei Teachers’ Committee says more than 10 members suspected of fueling a pay strike have been suspended by the state Ministry of Education.

The teachers went on strike in October, saying a circular by the national Ministry of Labor and Public Services to improve their pay was not being implemented.

After a meeting in Bor this week, the teachers resolved they would continue with the strike until they are shown another circular from the national Ministry of Labor, reversing the pay structure.

“This suspension will not stop our strike because what we want from the state government is to show us that the central government did not send the money to the state or give us the document that shows that the money was not sent from Juba,” said Gai Chau, Secretary of the Teachers’ Committee.

For now, they say the schools remain closed.

However, the State Minister of Education, Susan Lith Aluong, says the matter is administrative and has declined to discuss it further.
