The Government of Japan has announced a contribution of $1 million for humanitarian activities in South Sudan.

The funds will be used by the World Food Program to improve food security.

In a press statement by WFP, Japanese Ambassador to South Sudan Kiya Masahiko says the funds will help WFP to purchase food that will help meet the immediate food needs of vulnerable people.

He says they will also work on projects that create assets for the communities.

He added that the money will also be used to build and rehabilitate infrastructure such as roads, dikes and expanding land for agriculture.

WFP Country Director Joyce Luma welcomed this contribution from Japan.

She said the contribution from Japan will go towards implementing food-for-assets activities in Lakes State early next year.
