Two jailed for three years over forging currency

A High court in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State has sentenced two people convicted of forging currencies to three years in prison.

The Congolese and his colleague from the Central African Republic were arrested at a hotel the town months ago after producing more than 150,000 fake South Sudanese pounds.

Other two Ugandans who were arrested with the convicts were later released without charges.

“According to the evidence before this court, based on the statement of the prosecution witnesses and the exhibits tended before this court, there is sufficient evidence to convict the two accused under section 156 of the penal act 2008,” said Obech Deruyong, the County High Court Judge.

“The first and the second accused are sentenced to three years in prison with effect from the effect of 2nd of May 2015,” he said.

No apparent emotions were noticed in the court room from the convicts after court handed them the sentence.
