Insurgents will no longer be rewarded – legal advisor

Author : | Published: Monday, June 1, 2015

There is no more room for rewarding people who rebel against the government to get administrative territories, the Presidential Legal Advisor has said.

Laurence Korbandy says this causes insecurity and lawlessness in the country.

He says any community that has administrative issues should wait for the constitutional making process to discuss their concerns.

Mr. Korbandy was speaking during an occasion to mark one year after the signing of the Greater Pibor Area Peace Agreement.

“[This] should not be a license to any group of people to carry arms and later ask for special status,” Mr Korbandy said.

He further said rewarding insurgents encourages others to fight the government.

“So this question as good as it is could be sharpening appetite of people to carry arms because David Yau, Yau carried arms and he was given special status. So this should not be the case,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Kiir’s special envoy to Greater Pibor, Akot Lual, said one of the outstanding challenges facing the area administration is lack of qualified civil servants amongst the Murle Community.

He urged the international community, NGOs and other well-wishers to help train the new administrators on system of governance.
