The International Committee of the Red Cross says the hunger situation is worsening for civilians in areas affected by the recently renewed fighting.

The areas include Unity, Upper Nile and some parts of Jonglei state.

There was a series fighting between the government forces and the SPLA-In Opposition last month.

The ICRC warns that urgent action needs to be taken to save nearly 100,000 people who have been forced to flee their homes in the last four weeks.

Jason Strauziuso, ICRC Spokesperson, says most of those affected are women and children.

“Where economic activity is minimal, markets are not working, food prices are rising, and basic services are limited,” he said.

“These people are not in extreme hunger right now, they could during in the next coming weeks and months.”

Mr. Strauziuso says many of the displaced people have crossed to the neighboring Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya.

The ICRC is appealing for about 23 million dollars from donors to reach up to 340,000 people with relief food.
