International Committee of the Red Cross says hundreds of thousands of people face severe food shortage in South Sudan.

The head of delegation for the ICRC in South Sudan Juerg Eglin says medical needs are also high.

Mr Juerg says the humanitarian consequences of the two years of conflict remain extremely concerning, though a peace agreement has been signed.

“The level of hunger is severe. Medical needs are high. Life in South Sudan is both chaotic and dangerous, and we are trying to help by improving access to food and health care,” he said in a statement.

Apart from massive food needs, Mr Juerg says many people are separated from their loved ones and millions others still desperately hope to return to their homes.

The ICRC issued the statement jointly with the Red Crescent Societies and the South Sudan Red Cross.

Ten days ago, the government refuted a report by the United Nations that more than 7.5 million people in South Sudan are food insecure.
