Gunfire subsides in Juba’s jebel suburb

Author : | Published: Friday, July 8, 2016

Gunfire has subsided around Jebel Kujur in Juba.

The gunfire first started about three hours ago around the presidential palace, where President Salva Kiir and First Vice Dr Riek Machar were meeting to discuss the security situation in the capital.

They were to discuss a clash that occurred in Gudelle and Munuki suburbs last evening.

By the time the gunfire started, President Salva Kiir and his two deputies, Dr Riek Machar and James Wani Igga, were addressing the press at the presidential guest house, J1.

Our reporter Obaj Okuj Shaqawa, who was at J1 to cover the meeting, shared with us the photos of the three leaders standing next to each other.

The gunfire quickly spread to Jebel Kujur, which houses the headquarters of the SPLM in Opposition forces.

This is an earlier recording of President Salva Kiir addressing the media flanked by Dr. Riek Machar and James Wani Igga: “Ladies and Gentlemen of the pres, what is happening outside is something that we cannot explain to you. Three of us were sitting inside here, discussing the situation of yesterday on what happened in Gudelle, and then talking about what we can do in the implementation of the agreement, and to build confidence among the forces, and to assure the civil population. So now this thing started before we finish.”

Heavy gunfight and artillery fire could be heard.

But for about half now, no more gunshots have been heard. Officials are yet to confirm.
