Two people died and 10 others were wounded when a suicidal man detonated a grenade in Kuacjok town over the weekend.

Officials say an unidentified man detonated the explosive at the main market in the town on Saturday night.

The attacker died on the spot while another victim later died in the hospital.

The town mayor, Ajiek Ajiek, says the wounded include four children and six traders from Darfur.

He told Eye Radio that the injured have been taken to Wau Teaching Hospital for treatment. The man threatened the traders before the incident.

“He was telling the shop owners that he wants to commit a suicide. If anybody was ready to die with him then he should follow him outside,” Mr Ajiek explained.

“And he took the lighter from the shop. The lighter cost about three pounds. Right from there, the grenade exploded.”

Mr Ajak says the town remained calm after the incident.
