Ban: UN consults gov’t over expulsion of UNMISS Coordinator for Unity

Author : | Published: Tuesday, July 14, 2015

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon says the body is consulting with the South Sudanese government about the expulsion of the UNMISS coordinator in Unity state, Mary Cummin.

Unity state authorities made the announcement yesterday, forbidding Marry Cummin from returning to the state capital Bentiu.

UNMISS Deputy Spokesperson told Eye Radio that the reason behind her expulsion is not clear.

But some media outlets cited officials saying the expulsion is connected to a recent UN report on human rights abuses and violations allegedly committed by the government forces in the state.

Yesterday, the ministry of Foreign Affairs said the national government has not received any information about the need to expel Ms. Cummin.

“I read the statement this morning, and we are in consultation with the central government”, Ban Ki Moon said, in a statement issued yesterday.

Mr. Ban says the UN will be very much disappointed if the expulsion takes effect, following the expulsion of UN humanitarian coordinator, Toby Lanzer last month.

The national government accused him of making negative statements about the economy.

Mr. Ban urged local authorities to fully cooperate with the UN agencies in the country.
