Gov’t vows to pursue those behind Unity atrocities

The government has assured the US Embassy that it will pursue those responsible for atrocities allegedly committed in Unity State.

The United Nations says children were raped, killed and recruited into the armed forces over the past two weeks.

The Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Juba, Chris Mead, says they discussed their concerns over human rights with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“…they noted that they would be willing to help provide access to allow protection actors to get into the areas of concern that we had mentioned in our statement,” Mr Mead said.

For his part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the government is committed to justice.

“As a responsible government of course we have to hold people accountable,” Amb Mawien Makol said.

“The access is guaranteed and protected by the government for the humanitarian personnel, NGOs which are delivering assistance to the areas.”

Last week, the UN reported that aid groups had evacuated their staff over security concerns. It said over 300,000 are in dire need of food and health services.
