The Government of South Sudan and the United Nations will hold a meeting in Juba on June 16 to review progress and challenges in implementing durable solutions for displaced populations.

The meeting will be co-chaired by the Acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ramanathan Balakrishnan, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Albino Akol Atak.

Ahead of the meeting, a joint UN delegation comprising OCHA, UNMISS and UNHCR will visit Malakal from June 10 to 12 to assess durable solutions projects and engage with communities, including returnees from the former Protection of Civilians site.

The review follows the first Steering Committee meeting, which led to the signing of a joint communiqué on durable solutions by 13 government ministries.

According to the UN, more than 2.5 million people remain internally displaced in South Sudan, with over one-third living in camps and displacement sites.

The government and the UN have set a target of helping 60,000 displaced people achieve sustainable solutions through voluntary return, local integration or resettlement by December 31, 2026.

State-level roadmaps have already been launched in Upper Nile and Western Bahr el Ghazal, with a third planned for Unity State.
