Mundri West County officials have dismissed media reports that the town is under the control of the SPLA-In Opposition forces.
Residents of the area had fled their homes yesterday afternoon due to random shooting.
It followed the killing of John Cleopa, the Executive Director of Mundri West County.
Mr Cleopa was shot dead while accompanying the county commissioner to a spot where two soldiers were killed on Thursday night.
Last evening, SPLM-IO official James Gatdet Dak announced that the town was captured ‘by our gallant forces under the overall command of Major General Elias Lako Jada’.
However, the Commissioner of Mundri West County, Hassan Bakhit Hawari, told Eye Radio this morning that the security situation is calm.
“As I’m talking to you this morning, the situation is calm and I am inside Mundri town,” Mr Hawari said.
“Up to now, we are not able to identify the people who shot randomly yesterday because the shooting was in all the directions.”
He urged the people of Mundri to remain calm.
