Beneficiaries in Yambio and Nzara Counties receive goats from the German Development Agency (GIZ) under the FONA project. The distribution of 750 goats aims to improve food security and diversify income for households within host communities and returnee groups.
The German Development Agency (GIZ) South Sudan, through the Food and Nutrition Security and Management of Natural Resources (FONA) project, has successfully procured and distributed 750 female goats to vulnerable households in Yambio and Nzara counties.
The project implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The project aims to reduce reliance on crop production and diversify sources of food and income. Goats provide protein through meat and milk, contribute to household assets, and produce manure for farming.
The project includes training for beneficiaries on livestock husbandry, focusing on animal health, feeding, and management. These sessions aim to help households maintain their assets and improve nutrition. GIZ conducted the procurement and transport of the animals in accordance with animal welfare regulations.
Through the FONA project, GIZ supports agriculture by addressing productivity and resource management. This distribution is a step toward building capacity within communities and addressing food security in South Sudan.
GIZ is an agency that works on behalf of the German Government to support development in over 120 countries. In South Sudan, Germany assists in fields including governance, development, agri-food systems, water supply, and peace.
