The Commissioner of Ulang County in Upper Nile State has said most parts of Ulang town have been submerged by the flood after the only Dyke there collapsed on Thursday.

According to Riek Gatluak, Ulang town residents are struggling to control the situation.

“The water is coming through and covering all the town, the water has broken the dike, you cannot see anybody, people are working on it, and they are trying to control it by pumping and taking the water out,” said Commissioner Riek Gatluak told Eye Radio.

Ulang County in Upper Nile state has experienced several episodes of flooding since 2019.

The recent flooding has caused the massive internal displacement of populations with their livestock in most parts of the county, posing a serious risk of food insecurity, poor health, poor nutrition status, and loss of lives.

According to a UN report, around one million people have been affected by extreme flooding in South Sudan this year, while conflict and economic dislocation have created a renewed famine risk.
