EU ‘shocked by collective failure of leaders’

The European Union Envoy to the Horn of Africa Region, Alexander Rondos, says they are disappointed and shocked over what he calls collective failure of the leaders of South Sudan.

He says the E-U countries have been disappointed when the warring parties failed to reach an agreement to end the violence in South Sudan.

Speaking at the Extra-Ordinary summit of the IGAD heads of State in Addis Ababa yesterday, Ambassador Alex Rondos, said the parties must stop the conflict in order to end the suffering of their people.

“Let’s be clear that we are dealing here with humanity. Women and children are dying as we speak; and they are dying not because of an act of God, not because of nature, they are dying because of the failure of political leadership in one particular country,” said Mr Rondos.

“But, on behalf of the European Union, I have to express very candidly our disappointment, if not shock at the fact that this situation exists because of the failure of leaders of the parties to come to an agreement over what is their sacred responsibilities over one’s own citizens.”

IGAD heads of state have agreed that the warring parties in South Sudan form a Transitional Government of National Unity within forty-five days.
