Telar Ring, Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs in his office - Apr 17, 2014.

The Legal Advisor to President Salva Kiir says the 2015 general elections will not be hindered by the delay to the constitutional review process.

The statement comes amid concerns raised by experts that the elections might not be conducted without a permanent constitution.

In an exclusive interview with Eye Radio, Telar Ring Deng, said efforts are being made to ensure that the review process is finalized by the end of this year.

“With or without the constitution review being completed, the election can still go ahead into 2015,” said Mr Telar.

“But we hope that we do that before the election, which is by the end of this year.”

Mr. Telar Ring said the completion of the constitution review process has been delayed because there was not enough time given to conduct it.

“We have to visit states; we have to solicit views of the civil society, views of our communities and much more. And then people come and write. So it is something in others that can take two years or more to come up with proper constitution.”

Currently, South Sudan is still using the Interim Constitution.

Last week, an official from the United States Institute for Peace said that the plans to organize general elections in South Sudan next year are not realistic.

The Director for Africa Program at the Institute, Jon Temin said that the ongoing conflict in South Sudan will greatly affect the participation of the citizens and the conduct of peaceful elections.
